The fantastic songwriter and musician Joe South died this week at the age of 72. That's him playing guitar on Aretha Franklin's "Chain of Fools" and on Bob Dylan's "Blonde on Blonde" album. But he's best known for the songs he wrote, including "Games People Play," which won the Song of the Year Grammy in 1969. Two years later, his "Rose Garden" got him another Song of the Year Grammy nomination and a win for the singer, Lynn Anderson. South also wrote a string of hits for Billy Joe Royal, including "Down In the Boondocks," "I Knew You When" and "Hush." But this is my favorite song of South's, also recorded by Royal, from 1968. It was only released on a 45, which remains on my Holy Grail list. So you'll have to settle for this You Tube playback.
