There I was, innocently reading the music listings in The New Yorker, when I noticed the blurb for an upcoming concert by Mavis Staples, which included this bombshell:
During the civil rights era, [the Staples Singers] performed frequently at demonstrations and churches...and Mavis even had an affair with Bob Dylan, who asked Pops [Staples] for her hand. (He approved of the match; she demurred.)
What?!?!?! Maybe that's a well-known story, but it was news to me. Anyway, here's Mavis performing Dylan's "Gotta Serve Somebody" from the album "Tangled Up In Blues: Songs of Bob Dylan."
