OK, so now I'm on a Delaney & Bonnie kick (see previous post). This 1969 album included the second-greatest version of "Do Right Woman/Do Right Man"--after Aretha's, of course. And it features Leon Russell on piano and fine organ work by Bobby Whitlock, who would go on to join Eric Clapton in Derek & the Dominos.

And it's a bonus Saturday!: Memphis songwriting legend Dan Penn ("I'm Your Puppet," "Dark End of the Street") co-wrote "Do Right Woman" with Chips Moman. Here's Penn's version from his 1994 album, "Do Right Man."

Gram Parsons was another fan of Dan Penn. The Burrito Brothers covered both "Do Right Woman" and "Dark End Of The Street". Really well, by me, especially "Dark End".

I love the FBB's version, too, but Penn always said his favorite 'Dark End' version was James Carr's. And it's pretty hard to beat.
